Here structure of an atom is shown in figure. 



Number of protons and electrons are equal in a neutral atom. And their number is equal to atomic number.

 For example hydrogen has atomic number equal to one, so it contains one electron and one proton.




 Similarly carbon atom has atomic number 6, so it has six protons inside the nucleus and six electrons around the nucleus.
